  • Hierarchically Responsible for around 10 FTE who, together with the Tech Tribe lead, form the Backend Chapter.
  • Sets the technical standards for the team and responsible for developing knowledge and fostering a culture of innovation.
  • Collaborates with other Chapter Leads to improve the maturity of processes and practices and to facilitate knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Coaching and mentoring of other Chapter members.
  • Organizess and facilitates tech talks, lunch and learns, hackathons and other sessions to fulfil the objectives of the Chapter (part of this role includes experimenting with what sessions work best).
  • Responsible for ensuring that we “build the thing right” while the Product Owner focuses on “building the right thing.”
  • Spends substantial part of their time practicing their craft through POCs and hands-on development.
  • Responsible for attracting and retaining engineering talent.


  • Strong people and communication skills – this role will involve lots of interactions with people from different roles and backgrounds.
  • Strong ability to think in terms of systems rather than siloes.
  • Understands implications of maintaining a 24/7, business-critical system.
  • Broad experience with different technologies and techniques with relevant specialisms (T-shaped).
  • Fluent with Kotlin and/or Java, Spring Boot and how the JVM works.
  • Strong understanding of concepts surrounding relational and document databases (we use Postgres and DynamoDB).
  • Understanding of service-to-service communication using Kafka.
  • Experienced a public cloud and container orchestration (we use AWS and Kubernetes).
  • Quick learner with an ambitious and results driven personality.
  • Ability to negotiate scope to agree to pragmatic deliverables.
