Mox operate a cutting-edge cloud-native data landscape. Relational database technology is an essential part of it. We are in need of somebody with the depth and breadth of knowledge in this area as we continue to scale in terms of data volumes, workloads and number of teams.

This is a hands-on role within Mox Data function focused on running, optimising and evolving the use of operational relational databases. We are looking for somebody with breadth and depth of knowledge and experience who can work hands-on on specific challenges as well as amplify themselves through coaching / evangelising / sharing of best practices within the wider Mox tech community. Our ideal candidate has enough depth with database internals and principles to be able to reason about a wide range of scenarios from first principles and effectively apply this in practice.

  • Next level of knowledge with regard to query optimisers, relational schema and query design and evolution, indexes, storage, caching and other elements that go into maximizing and ensuring consistent performance or relational DBs as data volumes and workloads scale.
  • We have a specific need for deep PostgreSQL expertise but ideally also experience with Oracle
  • Extensive experience with DB tooling, observability, metrics to monitor, best practices for alerting
  • Replication and leveraging replicas for scale, performance, failover
  • Experience with addressing high availability / resilience concerns
  • Backup strategies, including multi-region
  • Ideally, familiarity with NoSQL and big data technology – DynamoDB / Cassandra, Redis, Kafka, and AWS storage technology
  • Desirable for experience with / exposure to Athena / Presto
  • Cloud is a must, major preference for AWS
  • Practical knowledge of the AWS managed data technology cost structure and ability to combine technical optimisations with cost considerations
  • Desirable for prior experience with implementing regulatory requirements for data retention
  • Desirable for knowledge and expertise in data warehousing and schema design
  • Desirable for familiarity / experience with contemporary infrastructure-as-code, policy-as-code and compliance-as-code approaches
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
